Orthopedics FAQs with The Animal Hospital at Lake Brandt

In our dedication towards providing dedicated care, The Animal Hospital at Lake Brandt in Summerfield, NC receives questions concerning veterinary orthopedics. Our answers and the common questions we encounter are explored below.

What is orthopedic surgery?

Any condition involving joints, bones, and ligaments within the body constitutes orthopedics. Debilitating pain can be the result of many orthopedic conditions as well as meniscal tears and osteoarthritis. Lame animals, animals in pain, and animals with limb deformities or fractures are treated through orthopedic surgery.

What common conditions do veterinarians screen?

The diseases and injuries that are common among pets include elbow and hip dysplasia, long bone fractures, cruciate (ACL) injury/tear, shoulder instability, and patella luxation. The diagnosis involves a diagnostic work-up and testing (primarily x-rays). Pet surgery at our Summerfield center will then be recommended where necessary.

What will an orthopedic exam achieve?

An orthopedic exam aims to establish the cause of the condition, which incidents contributed towards the development of the condition, your pet’s medical history, and the possible treatments options available that will benefit your pet.

What is the pet surgery process like?

Restrict the consumption of food and water at least 12 hours before the procedure. Diagnostic blood work will be conducted before the surgery. Completion of orthopedic surgery can take several hours due to its complexity. Pets will not be released immediately after the procedure.

How will a veterinarian help with post-surgery?

Our veterinarians will require that your pet is kept under observation after pet surgery while the anesthesia wears off. This ensures that during the surgery there were no complications. Pain medication will be prescribed to your pet. At least six weeks will be required to conduct a proper rehabilitation program to restore your pet’s mobility.

Testimonials

Feedback from our clients

  • "I have been taking my 16 year old lab, Oscar, to this vet since he came to me in 2004, and I wouldn't take any of my dogs anywhere else! They are so wonderful with both pets and people. I would recommend any of the doctors and staff to anyone."

  • "We have been going to another vet for years. We wanted to have our year old Wheaten Terrier, Rylee spayed by laparoscopy so she would have less pain and be back to her usual activity in 2-3 days instead of 10-14 days. Our vet does the traditional spay. We had a consult meet and greet with Dr. Courtney Pierce. She answered all our questions and so friendly and professional. They have a state of the art OR suite. Rylee did great. On post op day three she spotted a squirrel and did an all out chase with no ill effects! All the staff were great."

  • "I love Dr. Jernigan at AHLB and would never take my dog anywhere else! The staff is excellent with animals and always professional, courteous and respectful to owners. I have trusted this animal hospital for all of my dog's care, including check ups, surgeries (she's had three!) and for boarding when we have to go out of town. Every experience I have had here has been wonderful and I highly recommend their services to anyone looking for a veterinary office for their furry children!."
