Allergies and Dermatology

Are skin problems or allergies slowing your furry friend down?

From sneezes to rashes, allergies and other dermatological issues could be making your pet downright miserable. Not to worry! The experienced team at The Animal Hospital at Lake Brandt is here to help! We are skilled at assessing, diagnosing and developing effective treatment plans for all kinds of dermatological issues. We also offer comprehensive testing to pinpoint allergy types and triggers. Let’s get that little guy or gal back on track and feeling better!

Fleas, ticks and other external parasites are not the only underlying causes of skin disease for pets. Allergies, autoimmune disorders, hormonal diseases, and resistant infections can all cause frustrating and sometimes uncomfortable symptoms. We have a full range of diagnostic services at our disposal to help identify the cause of skin conditions and to outline a treatment program for them. Whether it’s running a simple blood test or conducting a detailed biopsy, we’ll get to the bottom of what’s causing your pet’s discomfort.

Upon reaching a definitive diagnosis, we will get right to work developing a plan to eliminate or at least reduce outbreaks as much as possible. The course of treatment we recommend will depend on the specific situation. For minor issues, something as simple as applying a topical cream may do the trick. More severe conditions, on the other hand, may require a more complex and multi-modal approach. We will discuss our suggestions with you and explain all of your options to help you make the best decision for your family.

Finally, as with most health care strategies, the best way to manage your pet’s external wellbeing is to take a proactive approach. Avoiding skin problems through the use of external and internal preventatives is an important part of your companion’s ongoing care. By developing an appropriate strategy, based on your pet’s particular circumstances and environment, we can often prevent many common dermatological issues that may occur.

Some of the more common external signs that a pet may be experiencing a skin problem include, but are not limited to:

  • Constant scratching
  • Swollen face
  • Sneezing
  • Excessive shedding or bald spots
  • Foul odor coming from the ears
  • Licking or chewing at the affected area
  • Scabs
  • Dry, flaky skin
  • Lumps under the skin
  • Bumps on the surface of the skin

If your pet is exhibiting any of these things, give us a call right away. We can provide the relief he or she deserves.

Feedback from our clients

  • "I have been taking my 16 year old lab, Oscar, to this vet since he came to me in 2004, and I wouldn't take any of my dogs anywhere else! They are so wonderful with both pets and people. I would recommend any of the doctors and staff to anyone."

  • "We have been going to another vet for years. We wanted to have our year old Wheaten Terrier, Rylee spayed by laparoscopy so she would have less pain and be back to her usual activity in 2-3 days instead of 10-14 days. Our vet does the traditional spay. We had a consult meet and greet with Dr. Courtney Pierce. She answered all our questions and so friendly and professional. They have a state of the art OR suite. Rylee did great. On post op day three she spotted a squirrel and did an all out chase with no ill effects! All the staff were great."

  • "I love Dr. Jernigan at AHLB and would never take my dog anywhere else! The staff is excellent with animals and always professional, courteous and respectful to owners. I have trusted this animal hospital for all of my dog's care, including check ups, surgeries (she's had three!) and for boarding when we have to go out of town. Every experience I have had here has been wonderful and I highly recommend their services to anyone looking for a veterinary office for their furry children!."
