LAPAROSCOPIC GASTROPEXY

Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV), sometimes known as bloat, is a common condition that occurs in large breed dogs. The bloating occurs when the stomach overfills with gas. The stomach often will twist, causing the loss of its blood supply. When this occurs, the patient experiences severe pain and if not treated urgently, the condition becomes fatal. Even if the patient is treated, 70-80% of affected dogs will experience reoccurrence of the condition. Prophylactic Gastropexy is recommended for the following breeds to prevent the occurrence of GDV.

Great Danes

German Shepherds

Saint Bernards

Wiemaraners

Irish Setters

Standard Poodles

Doberman Pinschers

The Animal Hospital at Lake Brandt is equipped and trained to perform this surgery using a minimally invasive technique known as Laparoscopic Gastropexy. Using this procedure, the stomach is tacked to the body wall to prevent twisting (volvulus). By performing the surgery laparoscopically vs traditional approaches, anesthetic time is decreased, much smaller incisions are used (reducing risk of infection), and the patient experiences less pain and scarring, subsequently being able to resume normal activity much faster. Laparoscopic Gastropexy is commonly recommended to be performed at the time of spay or neuter in high risk breeds.

If your pet is a high-risk breed, and you are interested in protecting it from this very serious condition, contact The Animal Hospital at Lake Brandt in Summerfield, Guilford County, North Carolina to discuss the procedure with one of our veterinarians. We will be happy to discuss risk factors, treatment, and prevention with you and to schedule an appointment for minimally invasive Laparoscopic Gastropexy to avoid the occurrence of this tragic condition.

Testimonials

Feedback from our clients

  • "I have been taking my 16 year old lab, Oscar, to this vet since he came to me in 2004, and I wouldn't take any of my dogs anywhere else! They are so wonderful with both pets and people. I would recommend any of the doctors and staff to anyone."

  • "We have been going to another vet for years. We wanted to have our year old Wheaten Terrier, Rylee spayed by laparoscopy so she would have less pain and be back to her usual activity in 2-3 days instead of 10-14 days. Our vet does the traditional spay. We had a consult meet and greet with Dr. Courtney Pierce. She answered all our questions and so friendly and professional. They have a state of the art OR suite. Rylee did great. On post op day three she spotted a squirrel and did an all out chase with no ill effects! All the staff were great."

  • "I love Dr. Jernigan at AHLB and would never take my dog anywhere else! The staff is excellent with animals and always professional, courteous and respectful to owners. I have trusted this animal hospital for all of my dog's care, including check ups, surgeries (she's had three!) and for boarding when we have to go out of town. Every experience I have had here has been wonderful and I highly recommend their services to anyone looking for a veterinary office for their furry children!."
